First, I must tell you that I am fascinated by, almost preoccupied with process; at work, while getting to work, while doing work… how do things work! As the architect, I follow a specific process of amassing all kinds of data- length, height, area. Listing and categorizing and arranging information is one of the myriad processes I go through to create a building. The experience, initially, is an extremely objective one. The subjectivity- the creativity- can only truly come after all the quantifiable requisites have been met.
As the artist, all of the work in this exhibit began in an exact opposite manner to that of the architect. Length and width were determined as I moved through subjective gestures on the picture plane; no preconceptions of what the work would be, or when it would become something. The important thing, the critical thing for me, as “the artist”, is that a process was taking place; I established the rules of the process, whether through the act of digging into the wood, or the scraping away of its bits and pieces, or perhaps the painting on and scraping off of the color, only to carve into it once again. Somewhere during the midst of all those actions, a relationship started to form between all the elements being assembled on the surface. This is where the creative journey vacillates between the subjective story being told through the objective object being looked at. The brush strokes and knife swaths, at first unanticipated and spontaneous, become slow, cautious, premeditated calculated jabs and dabs. The interplay of proportion and scale begin to emerge (the architectural rigor of my formal training coming through) as I allow more possibilities to arise out of the geometric fog emerging out of the plywood. All the paintings displayed here were created at time when I needed a cathartic outlet in order to cope with enormous stresses from my “paying” job; I just did not know this at the time I painted these abstractions. I did not begin the work saying to myself- “I am going to jab the crap out of this plywood because I am feeling violent”. Before I began a painting I did consider what could happen to a painting if the painting did not simply reside on what is traditionally thought of as the “surface”. This is MY way of creating a world bound by MY rules, MY precepts, MY outcomes.
It was liberating.
I hope that within every one of the abstract images on display, you will study the lines, forms, crags, gaps, and wire, and by ‘listening with your eyes’, observe- the space that exists somewhere between you and the work on the wall. YOU, the observer, are given the opportunity to create a world within your mind’s eye that cannot be defined, at least by dimension. You are asked to step away and stare; you are asked to also walk nose-up to the pieces and see the peripheral.
“I am on a quest to create space that exists on the picture plane which has no measure; where the observer will encounter, if even for a fleeting second, a place that is both remote and within at the same time.”
